Understanding Person-Centred Nutrition and the IDDSI Framework: Why You Should Attend Our Open Course

Lizi Price

Proper nutrition plays a crucial role in overall health, but for individuals with swallowing difficulties (dysphagia), ensuring safe and adequate nutrition is even more essential. The International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) framework provides global guidelines for food and drink texture modifications to reduce choking risks and improve the quality of life for individuals with dysphagia.

At Training in Healthcare, we are committed to providing high-quality training for healthcare professionals, carers, and catering teams to ensure safe and effective nutritional care. Our upcoming "Nutrition and IDDSI" open course will help attendees gain hands-on experience with IDDSI testing and develop a deeper understanding of person-centred nutrition.

Why is IDDSI Important?

Dysphagia affects people of all ages, particularly older adults and individuals with neurological conditions such as Stroke, Parkinson’s disease, or Dementia. Improper food textures can lead to serious health risks, including choking, aspiration pneumonia, dehydration, and malnutrition. The IDDSI framework introduces a standardized way to modify food and fluids to ensure they are safe for consumption. This framework includes eight levels of food and drink consistency, ranging from thin liquids to pureed and minced diets.
